November:
-Jon, Zach, Liz, and Nancy present posters at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in San Diego, CA.
-Qianqian passes her oral qualifying exam.
October:
-Julie officially accepted an Assistant Professor faculty position at the University of Arizona, Tucson! She is jointly appointed by the Neuroscience and Speech, Language and Hearing departments
September:
-Jon served as a “Genome Geek” at the Smithsonian for a new exhibit called “Genome: Unlocking Life’s Code”. He contributed to the exhibit by explaining that proper expression of FoxP2 in learned vocalizations is critical for learning.
- Nancy wins a SfN Chapter Travel Award.
July:
-Chae Kim receives an Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URSP) award.
July:
-Nancy and Liz co-author a J. Neuroscience Journal Club article.
-We say goodbye to Mike as he begins his postdoc in Dr. Waschek’s lab at UCLA and to Lily as she begins medical school at Loma Linda Medical University.
-Jon passes his oral qualifying examination!
June:
-Three of our undergraduates graduate - Congratulations Debora, Lily, and Omar!
-Jon is awarded a Edith Hyde Fellowship and Zach is awarded a Eureka Scholarship to support their graduate studies.
-Debora wins a Whitcome Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship!
May:
-Mike successfully defends his dissertation research. Congratulations Dr. Condro!
-Liz passes her oral qualifying examination and is now a doctoral candidate.
-Qianqian, Jon, and Zach’s paper is accepted by Journal of Experimental Biology!
-Mike’s paper is accepted by Journal of Comparative Neurology!

-George begins his new position as a research assistant at the Institute for NeuroImaging and Informatics at USC.

-Petra heads to Stanford for her freshman year of college.

-Chae is awarded a second year of URSP.

-Nancy is awarded a Young Investigator Award from the International Society for Neuroethology.
-Nancy and Stephanie head to Japan to present talks at the International Congress on Neuroethology.
-Joe Simon joins the lab.
June:
-Yishan is awarded a Biomedical Research Summer Scholarship.
-Jingwen “Violette” Yao comes to the lab for the summer through the Chinese Scholars in Science and Technology program.
-Mandisa Taqqee visits as part of the BRI-SURE program.
May:
-Nancy is awarded a Young Investigator Award from the International Society for Neuroethology.
-Petra wins 2nd place in Behavioral/Social Sciences at ISEF! And, 3rd place from the American Psychological Association.
-Petra decides to attend Stanford University!
April:
-Jennifer Morales joined the lab.
-Petra won 1st Place in Zoology at the California State Science Fair.
March:
-Petra won the Senior Division Behavioral and Social Science Category at the Los Angeles Science Fair and earned a spot at Intel’s Science and Engineering Fair in May!
-Zach, Nancy, and Stephanie headed to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory to attend the Avian Genomics Workshop and Avian Model Systems Meeting.
